An Analysis of the Situation Needed a Consumer Advocacy


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop the theory of consumer advocacy. The task for the study was to distinguish the attributions of "protection" and "advocacy" through the concept analysis of advocacy, and then to analyze the situations of
the
consumer advocacy in clinical setting. This study was approached with ethnographic method.
Qualitative date date was collected through intensive interviews five nurses experienced working at general hospital or clinic, from December 3, 1993 to December 23, 1993.
The content of interviewing was tape-recorded and documented for analysis. Therefore, thirteen meanings which were derived from 51 situations in need of consumer advocacy were categorized into four types; organizational power imbalance,
infingement
of
patients' right, deficiency of the professional ethics, and medical commercialism.
Finally, those of 13 meanings and 4 categories mode out 4 descriptive propositions.
